Frequently Asked Questions
What sort of things do you write?
I write most things. I have particular expertise in annual reports and investor communications, but I also write corporate websites, corporate and product brochures, white papers, bids, internal communications for change programmes, employee handbooks, trade magazine articles, presentations, video scripts, case studies, guidelines, speeches and most other projects you can think of.
There are some things I don’t do, though. If you’re after naming, tone of voice, sales websites for small businesses or an advertisement that captures your brand in three words, then I’m not the best person. I do know people who do those things well, and I’ll happily pass your details on to them.
Why should I use you?
Because I deliver great results, on time and in budget.
I can do this because I’m experienced. I’ve been helping companies to communicate better since 1996 and in that time, I’ve worked with businesses in most sectors. I’m also a fast learner, so I’ll quickly get to grips with your issues. I can write exactly to your brief or I can help you to work out your messages and the story you want to tell.
I also try to make your project go smoothly, with no drama and no fuss, which makes me easy to work with.
If you want more than my word on it, check these testimonials from my clients.
How much do you charge?
That depends on how long your project will take and how much value you need me to add, through advice on your content and messages. Every job is different, which is why I don’t state any prices on this site.
Once you’ve briefed me, I’m happy to quote you a fixed price for your job, which gives you certainty about how much it will cost. I can also charge you on an hours-worked basis, if you prefer. Clients who opt for this often like to set a cap for the fee, which I won’t exceed without their agreement.
I’ll tell you my day rate if you ask but by itself it’s not a good guide to cost. We might have very different ideas of how long something will take. Also, the way you like to work can significantly influence how long the copywriting takes.
Finally, it’s likely you’ll be comparing quotes from a few writers. I probably won’t be the cheapest but I deliver a lot for my clients and that means that you’ll get fantastic value – as my clients will tell you.
Do you specialise in any particular industries?
No. I do a lot of financial services copywriting, but I’ve also worked with companies in almost every other sector, from basic industries to technology.
While I do need to understand your business, I don’t have to be an expert in it from the start – that’s where you come in.
Do you work with companies outside London or the UK?
Absolutely. I’ve worked with many clients that I’ve never met face to face. Phone and email is all that’s needed.
I’ve already written my document. Will you edit it for me?
Yes. This can be a very cost-efficient way of getting your project done. It typically takes a lot less time for me to edit a document than to write it from scratch.
As well as editing the words, I can also help you to structure your copy so that it flows smoothly and logically, and ensure that your key messages shine through.
Do you do proofreading?
No, but I know some excellent proofreaders, so feel free to ask.
Can I see some examples of your work?
The projects section of this site has many examples of my work and I add more all the time. I’d like to include everything I do but some of my projects are confidential, particularly for internal communications.
What do you need from me?
A good briefing, so I can give you an accurate quote and produce what you want. A fast response to any follow-up questions. And a quick turnaround of each draft, with clear comments and explanations of what you want changed.
